The largest naval complex in the world, Naval Station Norfolk occupies approximately 4,300 acres on the northwestern tip of Virginia's Sewell Point Peninsula, located at the confluence of the James and Elizabeth rivers. Established on Independence Day in 1917, Naval Station Norfolk initially served as a training ground for America's naval aviators during World War I. During World War 2, the base became the logistics and training hub for all U.S. Navy and Allied aircraft carrier and anti-submarine units. Today, the base supports approximately 75 ships and more than 130 aircraft and functions as the logistical centerpoint for the U.S. Military's European and Central Commands. Home to Naval Air Station Norfolk and numerous tenant commands, it has provided critical support to enhance the combat readiness of the Navy's Atlantic Fleet for more than eight decades. This coin is dedicated to the Military and Civilian personnel who continue to proudly serve this great Naval Station. Minted on the obverse is a montage that symbolizes the importance of Naval Station Norfolk to America's history. The reverse contains a rendering of the official seal of Naval Station Norfolk. Minted using dies that have been sculpted in deep relief, this intricately detailed coin is struck in MerlinGold,® a proprietary brass alloy that simulates the look and feel of gold, and is finished in antique bronze. Each piece comes packaged with a header card that describes the rich history of Naval Station Norfolk. ™ Department of the Navy. Officially Licensed by the Department of the Navy.
