USS Missouri Navy MerlinGold® World War II Commemorative
Prior to the Japanese surrender, the USS Missouri's massive guns effectively wiped out the enemy's most strategic industrial facilities, including the factories that produced the infamous Japanese warplanes, known to the Allies as "Zeroes." Signaling the ship's important contribution to the Allied victory, the USS Missouri's broad teak deck was the site of the official ceremony that ended World War 2. On the morning of September 2, 1945, Japanese officials boarded the legendary American warship and offered their unconditional surrender. A testament to its amazing durability, the USS Missouri also played a vital role in America's military campaigns in Korea, Vietnam, and the 1991 Persian Gulf War. This coin is dedicated to all who served aboard the USS Missouri (BB-63) throughout her long and distinguished career. The obverse contains a rendering of the famous ship as she glides through the water. The reverse depicts an emblem of the US Navy, featuring an eagle grasping an anchor in its talons, encircled by chains and rope, symbolic of naval traditions dating back to the nation’s first ships. This coin is minted in MerlinGold,® a proprietary brass alloy that simulates the look and feel of gold. Each coin comes packaged in a tarnish-resistant Lucite capsule and is accompanied by a detailed header card that describes the U.S. Navy's fascinating history. ™ Department of the Navy.
