Naval Station San Diego

Strategically located on America's southern Pacific coast on the eastern shore of San Diego Bay, Naval Base San Diego is home to nearly one-third of the Navy's fleet in the Pacific Theater.

Naval Base San Diego is homeport to 60 Navy ships and two Coast Guard cutters and is also home base to 50 tenant commands, including the Fleet Training Center and the Naval Education and Training Support Center. Encompassing 97 acres, the base supports more than 40,000 military and civilian personnel and is the Navy's largest surface force support installation. Originally commissioned in 1922, the base expanded rapidly during World War II and played a crucial role in sustaining America's Pacific Fleet. From 1943 and through 1945, the base performed maintenance, repair, and overhaul on more than 5,117 Navy ships. In the decades following the end of World War II, Naval Base San Diego served as a key strategic asset of America's military infrastructure.  Today, this state-of-the-art facility continues to project American naval power across the world. 

This coin pays tribute to the history and mission of Naval Base San Diego and honors all those who support this great American military installation. The obverse features a pair of Navy ships cruising through the waters of San Diego Harbor beneath the famous Coronado Bridge. San Diego's skyline is faintly visible in the background.  The reverse features a rendering of the official base seal.

Minted in a brass alloy, brushed with an antique finish, and accented on the reverse with bright navy blue enamel, this coin features exceptionally deep relief. Each coin comes packaged with a header card that describes the Navy's commitment to fighting for freedom around the world.
